The interior alterations at the UBC Centre for Disease Modelling in the Life Sciences Centre for a new Dry Heat Sterilizer were completed in the fall of 2010. The project had 2 main components and involved  modifications at 2 locations within the barrier lab facility, firstly to relocate an existing steam autoclave to another floor and secondly to suit a new larger scale Gruenberg Dry Heat Sterilizer in the original autoclave location. A key role in this type of research oriented project is equipment coordination and in this case, dialogue with the Dry Heat Sterilizer vendor PharmaMedSci based in Calgary was critical to achieving the schedule and meeting the requirements of the equipment prior to the delivery and commencement of the installation by the manufacturer’s install team. To accommodate the new sterilizer, architectural modifications and mechanical/electrical infrastructure rough-in were coordinated and implemented in time for the start of the equipment installation. The new dry heat sterilizer installation has increased the processing and handling capacity of the sterilizing demand for the barrier-laboratory facility.
